A house move in Montreal usually starts smaller than it ends up being. You think about the sofa, beds, dining table, and the boxes already sitting by the wall. Then someone opens the garage. The basement still has shelves full of things. There are chairs outside, tools in a corner, and somehow another six boxes appear the night before the move. That is pretty normal. The stairs, furniture, storage areas, driveway, garage, and even that awkward cabinet in the basement all matter once moving day actually starts.

Planning Around Your Montreal Home and Moving Date

The first thing we want to understand is the house itself. Is everything mostly on one floor, or are we carrying furniture from upstairs and storage from the basement? Can the truck get close to the entrance? Is the driveway open, or are there cars, bins, and other things in the way? None of this sounds very exciting, but it tells us how the job will really go. A three-bedroom house with easy access can be simpler than a smaller home with narrow stairs and heavy furniture on every level.

Take a quick walk through the house a few days before the move. Look at the large pieces first. Beds, sofas, tables, desks, shelving, exercise equipment, big mirrors. If you look at something and think, “That is going to be annoying,” mention it. You are probably right.

The moving date matters too. Maybe you only get the new keys after lunch. Maybe you need to be out early. Maybe there is a gap between the two addresses. Those details are better discussed beforehand than while the truck is already loaded.

We also suggest keeping important personal items away from the moving pile. Keys, documents, medication, laptops, chargers, wallets. Put them in one bag and keep that bag with you. Otherwise, the phone charger you need at 9 p.m. has a very good chance of ending up somewhere inside box number thirty-seven.

Moving Furniture Through Stairs, Doors, and Tight Turns

Furniture behaves differently once it leaves the room it has been sitting in for years. A sofa that looks completely normal beside the window can suddenly seem enormous at the top of the stairs. A dining table becomes awkward in a doorway. A solid dresser gets much heavier when it has to make a turn halfway down to the main floor. This is where we slow down for a minute and look at the route instead of immediately pulling harder.

Sometimes the solution is simple. Take the drawers out. Remove the table legs. Break the bed frame down into sections. Turn the piece before it enters the hallway instead of trying to rotate it once there is no room left.

Older Montreal houses can have some interesting staircases too. Narrow landings, lower ceilings, tight basement steps, railings that take away just enough space to matter. A piece may fit through the bedroom door and still have no chance of making the next turn in the same position.

We also pay attention to what is around the furniture. Walls, floors, railings, door frames. Getting a sofa downstairs is not much of a success if the wall ends up with a long scrape beside it.

If you have something unusually heavy or awkward, tell us in advance. A large safe, gym machine, oversized mirror, workbench, or solid wood cabinet can change how we prepare. It is always easier to think about it before someone is standing beside it with gloves on.

Packing the Kitchen, Bedrooms, and Everyday Belongings

Packing the whole house at once is usually where things start feeling messy. One open box in the kitchen, another in the bedroom, clothes on a chair, packing paper on the floor, and nobody knows where the tape went. We prefer finishing one area and then moving on. It feels slower for the first hour and much faster by the end.

The kitchen usually takes longer than expected. Plates, glasses, pans, pantry food, small appliances, mugs you forgot you owned. There is always more in those cabinets than it seems. Pack fragile pieces tightly enough that they are not moving around inside the box. If you shake the box gently and hear everything shifting, it probably needs more padding.

Bedrooms are easier until you open the closets. Shoes, bags, spare bedding, storage bins, old jackets, boxes on the top shelf. Pack what you do not need first and leave enough clothing out for the last few days. There is no prize for sealing every shirt away a week early.

Books should go into smaller boxes. Seriously. A huge box full of books looks innocent until somebody tries to lift it. Bedding, pillows, and towels can go into larger ones without turning into a back workout.

Keep labels simple. Kitchen. Main bedroom. Office. Basement. Garage. If something is fragile, write that too. Nothing fancy is required. The label just needs to make sense when everyone is tired later.

Managing Garages, Basements, and Extra Storage

The garage is usually where people realize the move is bigger than they thought. “There are only a few things in there” can mean two bikes, toolboxes, winter tires, shelving, camping gear, sports equipment, folding chairs, and several plastic bins nobody has opened in years. That is why we like to include the garage in the conversation from the start.

Basements can be similar. Sometimes it is a finished family room with regular furniture. Sometimes it is storage, exercise equipment, shelves, a freezer, old boxes, and one heavy cabinet tucked into a corner. The access matters too. Tight basement stairs can turn an ordinary item into the hardest piece of the day.

Outdoor things count as well. Patio furniture, barbecue equipment, garden tools, hoses, planters. If they are coming with you, they belong in the plan. Better to know that before the main part of the truck is already full.

We also try to keep outdoor and garage items separate from cleaner household belongings when it makes sense. Nobody wants a dusty garden tool leaning against a mattress or upholstered chair for the ride across town.

This part of the move is also a good excuse to get rid of things you already know you do not want. If something has been sitting untouched in storage for five years, moving day does not automatically make it more useful. Less to carry, less to unload, less to find space for later.

Once the garage, basement, and storage areas are included from the start, the move becomes much easier to understand. No surprise second half. No sudden discovery of another twenty boxes after lunch.

Getting Everything Into the Right Place at Your New Home

People spend a lot of time thinking about getting out of the old house and much less time thinking about what happens when the truck reaches the new one. Then the doors open and every item needs an answer. “Where does this go?” becomes the most common question for the next hour.

A quick walkthrough helps. Show us the bedrooms, office, living room, basement, garage. Tell us where the large furniture should roughly end up. It does not need to be perfect. We just want to avoid carrying a heavy dresser upstairs and finding out it belongs downstairs.

Large pieces are usually best placed before the rooms fill with boxes. Beds, sofas, tables, shelving, dressers. Once everything else is stacked around them, adjusting furniture becomes much more annoying.

This is where those simple box labels start paying off too. Kitchen goes to the kitchen. Garage boxes go to the garage. Bedroom boxes go upstairs. It sounds obvious, but after several hours of moving, obvious is exactly what you want.

Keep a first-night box easy to find. Bedding, toiletries, chargers, a few kitchen basics, maybe coffee. You probably will not unpack the entire house that evening, and honestly, you should not have to.
