Start with the things you can live without for a few days: books, decorations, extra clothes, spare kitchenware. Leave the coffee maker alone for now. Same with your phone charger. There is nothing heroic about packing those on Monday and then hunting through boxes until Friday.

We usually tell people to finish one area before attacking the next. A completely packed bedroom feels much better than five rooms that are each twenty percent done. It also keeps the apartment from turning into a maze of open cardboard and loose packing paper.

Labels can stay simple. Write where the box needs to go. Kitchen. Bedroom. Office. Storage. If there is glass inside, write that too. You do not need a beautiful colour system unless making one genuinely makes you happy.

Keep personal things separate from the moving pile. Keys, documents, medication, laptops, wallets, chargers. Put them in one bag and keep that bag with you. Otherwise, a perfectly ordinary black backpack can disappear into a truck full of perfectly ordinary boxes very quickly.

And before bed, check the places people always forget. The top shelf in the closet. The cabinet above the fridge. Under the bed. The little storage space near the entrance. There is almost always something sitting there quietly, waiting to become the last-minute box.

Hallways need room too. If every packed box is stacked beside the door, the crew has to move half of them before the first large item can come out. Leave one clear path if you can. It makes carrying faster and the apartment feels less chaotic while the work is happening.

If your building has an elevator, check whether you need to reserve it. If there is a rear entrance, loading area, or special mover access, find that out too. Some buildings are straightforward. Some have a small adventure waiting between the lobby and the truck.

Electronics need their own space and a bit of common sense. TVs and monitors should not be squeezed between heavy furniture because there happened to be a gap. Keep cables together if possible. Label them if you have several devices. At the new place, every black power cable suddenly looks exactly the same.

Kitchen items are another classic. Plates, glasses, jars, small appliances. Do not leave too much empty space inside the box, because everything starts moving the moment the box does. And if a box becomes so heavy that lifting it feels like a gym exercise, split it.

We also like to know about unusual items beforehand. Large mirrors, artwork, tall plants, exercise equipment, awkward lamps. Every apartment seems to have one object that looks easy until somebody actually picks it up. Better to know which one it is before the move starts.

Once things start reaching the truck, there needs to be some order. We are not just filling empty space until the doors barely close. Heavy pieces need somewhere stable to sit. Once the truck reaches the new address, people are usually ready to be finished. Fair enough. But where things go during unloading can save you a lot of work that evening. If every box lands beside the front door, you are basically scheduling a second move for yourself later.

We prefer a quick walkthrough before unloading. Show us the bedroom, office, living room, and where you want the larger furniture. Nothing formal. Two minutes is often enough.

Then the big pieces can go in while there is still room to move them around. Bed, sofa, table, dresser, desk. It is much easier to adjust a heavy cabinet before fifteen boxes are sitting around it.

After that, labels do the rest. Kitchen boxes go to the kitchen. Bedroom boxes go to the bedroom. Simple. If you have one box with bedding, chargers, toiletries, and a few things for the first night, keep track of that one especially.
