Preparing Your Home for Moving Day

The easiest house moves usually start before the truck arrives. Not weeks of complicated preparation, just a few practical decisions made at the right time. Which boxes are going? What stays behind? Is the guest room packed? Has anyone checked the cupboard under the basement stairs? Are the garage shelves part of the move too? A house has plenty of corners where belongings quietly collect, and those corners tend to become very noticeable at 7:30 in the morning when the crew is already on the way.

We usually recommend working room by room instead of trying to pack the whole house at once. Finish the office. Then the spare bedroom. Then the kitchen items you do not use every day. It feels slower at first, but there is a nice moment when a room is actually done and you can close the door. That is much better than having six half-packed rooms and no idea where the tape went.

Labels do not need to be fancy. A marker and a few clear words are enough. “Kitchen”, “Main Bedroom”, “Basement”, “Garage”. If something is fragile, write that too. When the truck reaches the new house, those little notes save a surprising amount of walking and guessing.

It also helps to separate anything that should stay with you. Keys, documents, medication, chargers, laptops, a change of clothes, maybe the coffee setup if you know yourself well. Put those items somewhere obvious and tell the crew they are not going on the truck. Nobody wants to search through thirty boxes for a passport or phone cable at the end of the day.

Before we start, we also like clear pathways through the house. Shoes, small rugs, bags, toys and loose objects can turn a simple carry into an obstacle course. You do not need an empty showroom, of course. Just enough room for two people to move a large item without stepping over a laundry basket every three metres.

Moving Large Furniture and Household Items

Large furniture is where house moving gets interesting. Sofas look perfectly reasonable until they reach a stair landing. Dining tables suddenly become enormous when they are turned sideways near a doorway. A dresser that has lived upstairs for ten years may leave everyone asking the same question: how did this get up here in the first place? These are normal problems. The answer is usually not more force. It is a better angle, a little disassembly, or a different route.

Before moving a large piece, we look at how it is built and where it needs to travel. Can the table legs come off? Does the bed frame separate into manageable sections? Can drawers be removed from the dresser? Sometimes taking five minutes to prepare a piece saves fifteen minutes of wrestling with it later.

Protection matters too. A wooden table needs attention around the corners. A mattress should stay clean during transport. A television should not end up squeezed between two pieces of furniture simply because there was space there. Mirrors, artwork and glass pieces need their own handling. We use the amount of protection that makes sense for the item and the route.

Stairs deserve special attention in houses. They may be straight and wide, or narrow with a turn halfway down. Older homes can have tighter landings, railings that limit movement, or lower ceilings near basement stairs. We do not assume that because something fits through the room door it will also fit down the staircase.

Sometimes the easiest route is not the most obvious one. A back door may offer more space. A piece may need to be rotated before it enters the hall. One item may need to move before another because it blocks access. This is the kind of problem solving that happens constantly during a real house move. It is less dramatic than it sounds. Mostly it is careful looking, measuring with your eyes, and not being stubborn when the first idea clearly is not working.

Garage, Basement, and Outdoor Items

The garage is where moving estimates sometimes go to die. People walk through the main rooms, count the beds and sofas, and then say, “Oh, there are just a few things in the garage.” Those few things can turn out to be bicycles, toolboxes, storage bins, shelving, winter tires, folding chairs, sports equipment, a lawn mower and several mystery boxes last opened two moves ago. We are not judging. Garages are very good at collecting things.

Basements can be similar. Some are finished living spaces with regular furniture. Others have storage rooms, workshops, freezers, exercise equipment, old shelves and boxes stacked behind boxes. Access can also be different from the rest of the house. A narrow staircase changes how large or heavy items need to be handled.

If you have a basement, garage, shed or backyard, include it when you tell us about the move. A few photos can be useful for understanding the volume. It gives us a more realistic picture of the job and helps avoid the classic moving-day sentence: “We forgot about all of this.”

Outdoor items need a bit of common sense too. Patio furniture is usually straightforward, but cushions should be dry before they are packed. Barbecues need preparation before transport. Garden tools should be grouped rather than left loose. Planters can be heavier than they look, especially after watering (moving morning is not the best time to give every plant a generous drink).

We also think about what should be loaded together. Dirty garage equipment probably should not be pressed against a clean mattress. Sharp tools need to be secured. Loose pieces need to stay contained. It is not complicated, but mixing every category of household item into one random pile inside the truck is not a good plan.

House moves are often bigger than apartment moves because the property itself gives people more places to keep things. That does not mean they need to be chaotic. It just means the garage, basement and yard need to be treated as part of the move from the beginning, not as an extra project discovered after lunch.

Loading the Truck and Protecting Your Belongings

Loading a moving truck is not just about filling empty space. There is an order to it. Heavy, stable pieces need good positions. Fragile items need protection from pressure and movement. Furniture has to be arranged so it is not rubbing against something hard for the entire drive. And yes, sometimes it really does feel a little like Tetris, except the pieces are heavier and nobody wants the dining table to lose a corner.

We start thinking about loading before everything reaches the truck. The crew needs to know which items are large, which are fragile, and which will be needed early at the destination. A good load should travel well, but it should also make sense when it is time to unload.

Furniture protection is part of that process. Moving blankets, wrapping and careful positioning help keep surfaces from rubbing or getting marked. Smaller pieces should not be allowed to move around loosely. Electronics and delicate items are treated differently from boxes of clothing or bedding.

Boxes matter too. A box that is packed properly is much easier to move and stack. Half-empty boxes can collapse. Overfilled ones can split or become awkwardly heavy. If the top will not close without somebody sitting on it, that is usually a sign to use another box.

We also pay attention to the home while loading. Door frames, flooring, stairs and walls are all part of the working area. Carrying a sofa through a hallway is not only about the sofa. It is also about getting it outside without leaving a new mark on the wall or scraping the corner near the stairs.

Once the truck is loaded, there should be a reason for where things are. Not perfection, but a stable, practical arrangement that can handle the trip across Toronto or into the surrounding area. The goal is simple: when the doors open at the new house, everything should still be where we expected it to be.

Getting everything out of the old house is only half of moving day. The second half begins when the truck pulls up at the new address and somebody asks, “Where do you want this?” If every answer is “just put it somewhere for now,” you can end up spending the next evening moving furniture inside the house all over again. A little direction during unloading saves a lot of work later.

We like to know the basic layout before the first large piece comes off the truck. Which bedroom is which? Where is the office? Is the sofa going into the living room or downstairs? Where should the dining table go? You do not need a detailed floor plan. A quick walk-through is usually enough.

Clearly labeled boxes help even more here. Kitchen boxes go straight to the kitchen. Basement storage can go downstairs. Bedroom boxes can follow the right furniture. It sounds almost too obvious to mention, but after several hours of moving, an organized unload feels very different from one giant stack in the front room.

Large furniture is worth placing properly while there are people there to move it. A heavy dresser is much easier to shift with a moving crew than by yourself later that night. Beds, tables and other pieces that were taken apart may also need to be positioned before the room fills with boxes.

The first evening in a new house is rarely glamorous. There are open boxes, the rooms sound a little empty, and somebody is usually looking for towels. That is normal. But there is a big difference between normal unpacking and having to reorganize the entire move after the truck leaves.
